Visiting Maryland's Eastern Shore
Maryland’s eastern shore is alive with activity in the spring and summer. Head outdoors to relax in area parks or along miles of sandy coastline, and find a sense of the personality of communities from Grasonville and Denton to Salisbury and Ocean City. Local event calendars are packed with special events, festivals, and all kinds of family-friendly fun.
This time of year, the coast is shimmering, and there’s no better way to see it all than by embarking on a scenic driving tour. Countless roadside attractions and historic sites await in every direction, and Ocean City, with its Ocean City Pier Rides and the Jolly Roger Amusement Parks, makes an especially nice family day trip destination.
Bring your kayak, canoe, or paddle board along for your trip to Denton this spring. The 2016 Paddlefest on the Choptank launches from the Greensboro Boat Dock on May 21st, inviting you to join participants in paddling all the way to the Denton Yacht Club. It’s a fun way to get active in some of the most beautiful weather eastern Maryland sees all year.
Downtown Denton is “Jazzin’ up the Streets” on August 19th and 20th. That’s when the 28th Annual Caroline Summerfest takes over, filling the historic district with live music, food, fireworks, fire truck rides, KidzArt, and more free fun for kids. The event goes from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. the first day, and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. the next.
When summer cools off in Ocean City, it’s time to cast a line. On October 7th and 8th, the 37th Annual Mid-Atlantic Surf Fishing Tournament on the Beach calls anglers of all ages and skill levels to come and compete for a variety of prizes at the 119th Street Beach. Make sure to plan ahead – all participants must have their Maryland Saltwater Fishing License.
Car guys and gals gather in Ocean City, October 6th through 9th, when more than 2,000 hot rods, custom classic, tricked out street machines, and more cruise into town. The 19th Annual Endless Summer Cruisin' event is held at the Ocean City Convention Center, with thousands of visitors expected to turn out for auctions, competitions, and all sorts of other gear-head gaiety.
