Washington D.C. is not just the nation's capital – it doubles as a proud sports town, featuring enough year round, exciting action to satisfy any sports fan.
Check out D.C.'s seven professional sports teams!
1. Washington Redskins
America's favorite sport has a proud home in America's capital. Founded in 1937, the Washington Redskins play home games at FedEx Field – the NFL's largest stadium – where they compete in the NFC East division. Catch the former Super Bowl champions run-down the competition every fall.
2. Washington Wizards
Originally founded in 1973 as the Washington Bullets, the Washington Wizards are D.C.'s proud NBA franchise. They run the hard wood at the Verizon Center during the winter months of October to April.
3. Washington Mystics
The Wizards aren't the only hoops-stars in D.C. – The Washington Mystics of the WNBA have called the capital home since 1998, playing home games at the versatile Verizon Center as well. The WNBA regular season runs from May to August.
4. Washington Nationals
Although they are one of the younger teams in the D.C. area, the Washington Nationals are already one of the more popular clubs as well. The "Nats" were founded in 2005 when they were relocated from Montreal. They compete in the NL East division of the MLB – playing home games at Nationals Park.
5. Washington Captials
Founed in 1974 as an expanison franchise, the Washington Capitals are D.C.'s proud NHL team and one of the oldest teams in the region. The former Eastern Conference champions defend home ice at the Verizon Center.
6. D.C. United
Major League Soccer has a home in the nationa's captial as well. D.C. United has presented the D.C. region since their inception in 1996, winning four MLS Cups along the way. They strike and score at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium every summer from March to October.
7. Washington Spirit
Looking for more D.C. soccer? Well we've got you covered! Founded in 2012, the Washington Spirit represent women's professional soccer as a recent expansion of the NWSL. They play their home games from April to August at Maryland Soccerplex just outside of the D.C. area.
